The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) report highlighted an increase in food insecurity in the United States in 2022, interrupting a previous trend of declining hunger.
The report indicated that 12.8% of households, equivalent to 17 million households, struggled to get enough food in 2022, up from 10.2% in 2021. Nearly 7 million households faced very low food security. The number of children living in food-insecure households also rose, with over 13 million children, or 18.5% of the country's child population, experiencing food insecurity in 2022. The report raised concerns about the consequences of reducing safety net programs and highlighted the impact of the pandemic on food insecurity. Anti-hunger groups warned that a potential government shutdown could exacerbate hunger issues further.
