The dairy markets have experienced increased volatility over the past few weeks, with Class III futures exhibiting significant fluctuations. This trend is expected to continue as the summer progresses, with traders reacting swiftly to underlying cash movements and perceived price shifts. Current milk futures suggest that prices could surpass last year's levels if spot prices remain steady. Improvement in milk prices hinges on increased demand and tightened supplies.

Notably, cheese inventory levels have not exceeded those of last year, indicating a higher probability of supply tightening if both domestic and international demand rise. Despite reports of improving cheese demand, inventory reduction has yet to materialize.

International cheese demand has shown substantial improvement, with March exports totaling 50,022 metric tons, a 20.5% increase from the previous year and the highest level recorded. This upward trend continued in April, with exports rising by 27% year-over-year to 46,271 metric tons, marking the second-highest month on record. The positive outlook for cheese exports has provided strong market support.

April saw a notable increase in butterfat exports, which totaled 2,881 metric tons, up 23% from the previous year and marking the first year-over-year increase since November 2022. This trend may pave the way for record butter prices this year, driven by the highest seasonal prices on record and improving demand. Rising domestic consumption, coupled with potential growth in international demand, suggests a significantly higher price trajectory for butter.

The improved international demand for cheese and butterfat is contributing to a more optimistic market outlook, offering solid support amid the current volatility. If these trends persist, the dairy market could see notable price increases throughout the year.
