US Flags Dispute Over Canada's Dairy Market Ahead of USMCA Talks

The US Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, addressed the US House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee regarding unresolved issues in Canada's dairy market. According to Greer, Canada has not made any commitments to alter its largely closed dairy market, which has been a point of contention. These issues are expected to be a key topic in the upcoming negotiations over the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Greer pointed out that Canada and Mexico will need to take measures to protect their economies from subsidized products from other regions, particularly focusing on autos from China. The lack of market changes from Canada in the dairy sector could lead to enforcement actions if not resolved through negotiation channels.

The US has been pressing Canada to open its dairy market to American products. Under the current conditions, the market remains largely closed, which the US views as a barrier to fair trade practices under the USMCA framework.

This situation may lead to further diplomatic negotiations and possible enforcement actions if Canada does not agree to make the necessary adjustments to its dairy market policies.
