Uruguayan Dairy Sector Achieves Record Revenue Despite Economic Challenges

The Uruguayan dairy industry has reported a significant milestone in 2026, with gross revenue reaching $272 million in the first four months, the highest in the past seven years. This growth, representing a 10% increase compared to the previous year, is attributed to a surge in production, with a total of 640 million liters of milk produced between January and April, an increase of 9.8% fr om 2025.

Despite the stable milk price of $0.42 per liter, the financial relief for producers is limited. The National Institute of Milk (Inale) highlights that the effective cash inflow to farmers is being diminished by two key factors. First, the purchasing power index has dropped by 9% compared to March of the previous year, meaning that while farmers earn more, the money buys fewer inputs. Additionally, the cost of milk has decreased by 4% in local currency, while the cost index has risen by 5.5%, driven by the basket of services and inputs.

This record revenue includes production from Estancias del Lago, which accounts for 12% of the national total, suggesting a nuanced impact on family and medium-sized producers. The current economic conditions present a 'volume paradox' for Uruguay, wh ere increased production and technological advancements do not translate into higher net margins due to macroeconomic pressures, such as a weak dollar and rising local costs.

In this context, operational efficiency has become essential to maintain profitability, as the purchasing power of farmers has regressed to 2024 levels. The industry must closely monitor whether this stagnation affects investment in forage reserves for the latter half of the year.
