Uruguayan Dairy Producers Support Claldy Amid Crisis

The Asociación de Productores de Leche (APLP) has expressed full support for Claldy, highlighting the essential role of the company for local dairy farmers. Producers are concerned about the continuation of their activities, having previously experienced the closure of PILI in 2019.
According to reports, the crisis stems fr om the need for Claldy to modernize its aging machinery for greater efficiency, despite the painful decision to cut jobs. APLP leader Gerardo De Souza emphasized the producers' commitment, stating, “we are in the same boat.”
The farmers are seeking governmental assistance to safeguard employment opportunities and sustain economic activity in the region, wh ere the dairy sector is crucial. The demise of Claldy could have catastrophic consequences for the local dairy value chain.
While Claldy aims to enhance competitiveness through a leaner and more efficient operation, this approach has sparked labor disputes that are being negotiated in Uruguay's Ministry of Labor. Claldy defends the restructuring as necessary for sustaining the employment of the remaining 200 workers, whereas unions aim to protect all jobs.
The producers’ support reflects a mix of solidarity and pragmatic concerns for a fragile sector. The resolution of Claldy's crisis will not only determine its future but could also set an important precedent for Uruguay's dairy industry.
