Uruguay’s Dairy Exports Fell 29% as Algerian Purchases Collapsed

Uruguay recorded dairy-product exports worth US$64m in August. The figure was lower than the US$90m recorded in the same month a year earlier, representing a 29% decline in export value.

Algeria accounted for the largest reported change in the figures. Algerian purchases of Uruguayan dairy products dropped by 88% during the period, falling from US$41m in the previous year to US$5m.

The reduction in Algerian purchases amounted to US$36m when the two August totals were compared. The country’s purchases therefore represented a smaller share of Uruguay’s reported dairy-export value than they had a year earlier.

Uruguay’s total dairy exports decreased by US$26m between the two August periods, from US$90m to US$64m. The decline in sales to Algeria was reported alongside the overall movement in the country’s dairy-export figures.

The reported data cover export values for August and compare them with the corresponding period one year earlier. They identify both the total value of Uruguay’s dairy exports and the value of purchases attributed to Algeria.
