Uruguay adopts 10 irrigation systems in colonies

The agricultural sector in Uruguay has taken a pivotal step towards modernization. The National Institute of Colonization (INC) has finalized the purchase of the iconic 'María Dolores' estate, spanning 4,404 hectares strategically located in the heart of Florida's dairy basin. This acquisition not only augments INC's assets but also represents a key investment with high social and productive impact, aimed at strengthening local dairy production and supporting smaller producers.

This estate will be organized into three key areas: dairies dedicated to milk production, a forage production sector, and an area for calf breeding. This scheme allows the estate to become a support center for local family producers. Through this synergistic model, the lands of ‘María Dolores’ will supply forage and breeding, freeing local producers' lands for greater pasture allocation for their dairy cows.

Economically, the initiative is expected to directly benefit about 200 family producers who previously lacked the necessary scale to compete. With access to forage and breeding, they can significantly increase their herd size, potentially doubling their annual milk production. According to the INC president, this expansion will increase milk supply to the cooperative 'Conaprole', illustrating that the project ‘pays for itself’ through the generated profitability.

In summary, the acquisition and investment in ‘María Dolores’ is a model of agricultural development that combines land redistribution with technological modernization. By empowering smaller producers with access to crucial infrastructure and services, Uruguay’s INC not only promotes equity but also boosts productivity and competitiveness in the national dairy industry, paving the way for a more resilient and prosperous future for Uruguayan agriculture.
