The European Union’s decision to reimpose tariffs on Ukrainian agricultural exports could cost the country’s producers up to €2.9 billion annually, according to Ukraine’s Deputy Economy Minister, Taras Kachka. The brunt of the losses is expected to fall on exporters of corn, wheat, poultry, and sugar—industries that have flourished under the bloc’s temporary suspension of duties introduced after Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

Starting June 6, the EU will introduce transitional tariffs on key Ukrainian goods. While framed as a regulatory adjustment, the move is widely seen as a political concession to member states whose domestic farmers have voiced growing discontent. Poland, in particular, has played a decisive role in lobbying for the change, citing the need to protect its agricultural sector from what it sees as unfair competition.

The reintroduction of tariffs marks a shift in the EU’s wartime economic solidarity with Kyiv, underscoring the limits of support when it begins to clash with internal political pressures.
