U.S. Dairy Leader Advocates for Reciprocal Tariffs Against EU

The U.S. Dairy Export Council, represented by trade expert Jaime Castaneda, is advocating for the U.S. to implement reciprocal tariffs against the European Union to address existing trade imbalances. Castaneda emphasized the need to 'reset' this imbalance, pointing out that the U.S. imports $3 billion in dairy products from Europe while exporting only $167 million to them.
In a conversation with Brownfield, Castaneda clarified that the trade deficit is not limited to gourmet foods and cheeses but encompasses a wide range of dairy products. To address this, the U.S. Dairy Export Council is preparing recommendations for the U.S. Trade Representative’s office. According to Castaneda, Europe's dairy industry is a prime target for these reciprocal tariffs, and collaboration with the new USTR, Jameson Greer, is anticipated. Castaneda highlighted the importance of appointing a strong chief agricultural negotiator to support Greer in these efforts.
