2024 Dairy Soils Carbon Programs:

Truterra’s 2024 dairy soils carbon programs are designed to reward pre-qualified dairy producers who adopt sustainable farming practices for crops used in dairy feed, such as silage and alfalfa. The sustainable practices highlighted in these programs include the use of cover crops, strip-till, or no-till methods, all aimed at improving soil health and increasing soil carbon levels.

Cover Cropping: A practice where specific crops are grown to protect and enhance soil health, cover cropping is essential for reducing soil erosion, improving water retention, and enhancing biodiversity.

Strip-Till and No-Till Practices: These methods involve minimal or no tillage, thereby reducing soil disturbance, preserving soil structure, and increasing organic matter in the soil.

These programs are supported by major dairy companies, including Land O’Lakes, Bel Brands, and Dairy Farmers of America. Participation in the programs is by invitation, with eligibility extended to both new adopters and those with a long history of implementing sustainable practices.

Additional Program Launches:

In addition to the dairy-focused initiatives, Truterra has introduced several other programs aimed at broadening its impact across the agricultural sector:

Field Data Management Program: This program rewards eligible farmers who provide field management data for their 2024 corn or soybean crops, helping to track and improve sustainable practices.

USDA-Funded Financial Assistance Program: This initiative offers financial incentives to farmers transitioning to strip/no-till practices and/or incorporating cover crops into their farming systems. The program is designed to lower the financial barriers to adopting these climate-smart practices.

Early Adopter Program: Recognizing the pioneers of sustainable farming, this program rewards farmers who transitioned to strip/no-till methods before the crop year 2015, acknowledging their long-term commitment to sustainable agriculture.

Executive Commentary:

Jamie Leifker, President of Truterra, expressed enthusiasm about the company’s expansion into the dairy industry. “Truterra is focused on pairing farmers seeking to adopt climate-smart practices with companies looking to fulfill their environmental commitments. We are excited to expand into the dairy industry with these unique market-backed programs,” Leifker said.

These initiatives not only support Truterra's mission of promoting sustainable agriculture but also align with the growing demand from consumers and companies for environmentally responsible food production practices. By bridging the gap between farmers and companies with environmental goals, Truterra is positioning itself as a key player in the future of sustainable agriculture.
