President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 90-day suspension of tariff increases for most U.S. trading partners, while sharply escalating duties on Chinese imports to 125%.

The move comes after days of signals from Trump that he would stick to his hardline trade policies. Under the new directive, countries that have not imposed retaliatory measures on the U.S. will face a reduced, uniform tariff of 10% through July.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the decision to raise tariffs on China reflects Trump’s tougher stance. “When you punch at the United States of America, President Trump is going to punch back harder,” Leavitt said.
