Tirlán, the Kilkenny-based dairy processor, has announced a significant increase in the price it pays for February milk supplies, providing relief to struggling farmers amidst adverse weather conditions.
Tirlán Boosts Milk Prices Amidst Challenging Conditions
Tirlán has confirmed that it will pay a total of 42.08 cents per liter, including VAT, for February creamery milk supplies boasting 3.6% butterfat and 3.3% protein. This increase represents a 2 cents per liter rise in comparison to previous prices.

The breakdown of the February milk price includes a base milk price of 38.58 cents per liter, along with a seasonality payment of 3.0 cents per liter, including VAT. Additionally, a sustainability action payment of 0.5 cents per liter will be allocated to all qualifying suppliers.

Moreover, Tirlán ensures that these payment components will be adjusted to accurately reflect the constituents of milk delivered by suppliers.

For February creamery milk based on LTO constituents of 4.2% butterfat and 3.4% protein, the total price reaches 45.71 cents per liter, including VAT.

John Murphy, Chair of Tirlán, emphasized the challenges faced by milk suppliers, particularly due to the adverse weather conditions affecting grazing and milk yields. He stated, "The February rainfall total at weather stations in the south east was 50%-80% higher than the long-term average. This is having a significant impact on milk supply and creating very challenging conditions for farmers, with yields per cow 10% lower than the same period last year."

In response to these challenges, Tirlán has decided to not only increase the milk price by 2 cents per liter but also offer a €30 per ton rebate on its GAIN dairy feed range from today until the end of March, aiming to assist farmers in boosting milk yields amidst the difficult conditions.
