The Laughing Cow Changes Its Expression in US Campaign

Bel Brands US has altered the face of The Laughing Cow, the processed-cheese brand’s long-standing mascot, as part of a temporary campaign. The character now appears serious rather than smiling on individual portion packs, while the revised identity also features on the brand’s social-media accounts and official website.

The company has called the character “The Not Laughing Cow” and has not yet explained what prompted the change. A separate campaign website, thenotlaughingcow.com, has been created as part of the initiative.

Jamee Pearlstein, marketing director for Bel Brands US’s cheese division, said the mascot had spent more than 100 years reminding people not to take life too seriously. “So when she suddenly gets serious, you pay attention,” Pearlstein said. “Whatever has finally bothered her must be something worth talking about. We’ll let her explain it herself when she’s ready.”

Bel’s social-media campaign is designed to reveal the story gradually. Consumers are being invited to speculate publicly about what caused the character to lose her usual good humour, with the lack of an immediate explanation forming part of the campaign’s narrative.

The change concerns a visual symbol that had remained associated with the brand for more than a century. Bel has presented the alteration as deliberate and temporary, and it has not indicated that the cheese product itself is being reformulated.

The company has not said when the story will be resolved or whether the new expression will remain only for the duration of the campaign. The initiative was reported in the United States on September 26, 2026.
