The Estate Dairy launches unhomogenised milk at Tesco

The Estate Dairy has launched its unhomogenised organic whole milk in Tesco stores in glass bottles. The product is sold in one-litre bottles, with a recommended retail price of £3. The company describes the milk as “gently pasteurised and never homogenised”.

The dairy said the milk has a “unique golden colour and a beautiful rich flavour”. It is the first milk line sold by Tesco in a glass bottle, according to The Estate Dairy.

Rebecca Young, co-founder of The Estate Dairy, said the company works with small farms that remain independently owned by their farmers. “We know them by name,” she said, adding that Tesco’s involvement would allow the work of those farms and “the benefits of proper milk” to reach more households across the country.

The company said it kept its existing bottle format rather than changing it for the supermarket. Oliver Scott-Harden, commercial director at The Estate Dairy, said the glass bottle was part of the product because consumers could see the cream in the milk. He also said it was the same bottle used by the dairy’s existing customers.

Unhomogenised milk has been identified by the company as a growing trend. The Tesco launch follows news that Waitrose had increased unhomogenised milk processing capacity at its Leckford Estate.

Homogenisation is not used for the product. The dairy’s description refers instead to gentle pasteurisation, while the glass packaging remains part of the product presentation and is used for the Tesco listing.
