The Polish government is set to implement substantial restrictions on the import of sensitive goods from Ukraine. Poland plans to replace the current national embargo on grain by negotiating a bilateral agreement with Ukraine and limiting the import of items such as sugar, poultry meat, eggs, frozen raspberries, apple juice, sunflower, and rapeseed oil.
Minister of Agriculture Cheslav Sekersky made this announcement during parliamentary hearings in the Sejm on Thursday, as reported by Interfax-Ukraine. Sekersky highlighted the significant losses suffered by Polish farmers due to the excessive openness of the European Union's territory to goods from Ukraine. While acknowledging Ukraine's need for assistance, Sekersky argued that the current state of openness in the European market for agricultural imports is unsustainable. He emphasized the challenges faced by farmers from Poland and other EU countries in competing under these conditions.
The Minister stressed that the Polish government aims to implement substantial restrictions on the entry of sensitive goods from Ukraine, including implementing detailed and potentially restrictive controls at the border.
It's noteworthy that a meeting between representatives of the Polish and Ukrainian governments is scheduled for March 28 in Warsaw. During this meeting, they will address the issue of unblocking the Polish-Ukrainian border.
