The governor of the Japanese prefecture of Shizuoka, Heita Kawakatsu, submitted an official resignation on Wednesday after a scandal caused by his statement that civil servants are smart people, unlike those who sell vegetables and take care of cows, the Japanese Kyodo news agency reports.

According to the agency, the post of governor will be automatically vacated in 30 days, after which the election of a new head of the region will take place. The possible date for the election of the governor is May 26.
As previously reported by Japanese media, Kawakatsu, during a speech to reporters at the June prefectural assembly, said that "everyone here is capable and intelligent people, unlike those who sell vegetables, take care of cows or create things." He also advised new government employees to stay honest, watch their language and stick to their beliefs.
The Kyodo agency noted that the governor already had a reputation for "making mistakes" since he took office in 2009. In 2021, he was advised to resign after a controversial statement about limited local delicacies. And in March, Kawakatsu got into another scandal when he ranked regions in his prefecture based on their "culture."
