The Commerce Ministry in Thailand is poised to review and potentially approve an increase in boxed milk prices, provided producers submit requests for adjustments due to heightened raw milk production costs.
Following the recent approval by the Milk Board to raise the ex-factory median prices for raw cow's milk, the Commerce Ministry is prepared to support the proposed price hike.
Chakra Yodmani, Deputy Director-General of the Internal Trade Department, clarified that the adjustments in milk prices would not be uniform. Instead, they would vary based on the proportion of raw milk used in different products such as UHT milk, pasteurized milk, sterilized milk, with plain milk, expected to have the highest price increase due to its 100% raw milk content.
Yodmani highlighted that the anticipated adjustment could impact the retail prices of various dairy products, with an average increase of 40-50 satang per box for a standard 225-milliliter package. This move aims to address the challenges faced by dairy farmers by aligning product prices with the increased costs of raw milk production.
