Telangana Implements Major Milk Distribution for School Nutrition

The Telangana state government has launched an ambitious program aimed at distributing fresh milk to 27 lakh students enrolled in public schools. This initiative is being executed through Vijaya Dairy, a state-owned cooperative, which will serve as the exclusive processor and distributor for this nutritional effort. The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who is overseeing the program alongside Animal Husbandry Minister Vakiti Srihari.

As part of this initiative, the government is conducting a significant data collection exercise focused on the region's livestock. The goal is to gather detailed statistics on provincial milk yields and livestock populations to ensure accurate supply capacities. This effort is expected to provide a robust baseline for both production and distribution efficiency.

The program also aims to strengthen the economic stability of smallholder farmers in rural Telangana. By establishing direct institutional purchasing channels through the school system, the government seeks to ensure fair and timely payments to farmers. This approach is designed to mitigate the financial instability often faced by dairy producers due to delayed payments.

To further support this initiative, the state is implementing a new financial management system. This system will streamline the flow of funds from state welfare departments directly to the operational agencies involved in the school milk supply, bypassing potential municipal delays. This is expected to improve the reliability of payments to primary milk suppliers.

The Telangana model highlights the potential of state-directed purchasing programs to not only absorb surplus production but also to protect the interests of local farmers.
