Taiwan Innovates Supplement to Boost Dairy Cow Milk Production

Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture has introduced a nutritional supplement in tablet form, designed to enhance milk production in dairy cows and reduce the risk of metabolic diseases post-calving. This project was a collaborative effort between the Livestock Research Institute and the Agricultural Chemicals Research Institute, aimed at tackling common health issues faced by dairy cows during the early lactation period, such as low energy levels, subclinical ketosis, and postpartum reproductive disorders.

Researchers from these institutes meticulously screened individual nutritional components and assessed their physiological impacts. The outcome of this research was the formulation of a tablet that provides precise supplemental nutrition. According to the Livestock Research Institute, cows administered the supplement after calving exhibited more stable blood glucose levels.

The data showed that cows receiving the supplement produced an average of 32 kg of milk per day post-calving, compared to 26.8 kg for those that did not receive the supplement, marking an increase of 5.2 kg per day. The research team emphasized that the supplement not only enhances milk yield but also supports the overall health of the dairy cows.

The team is currently focused on optimizing the manufacturing processes and evaluating large-scale production to ensure product consistency and quality. The Ministry of Agriculture believes that this domestically developed supplement will offer dairy farmers a practical tool to mitigate disease risks and production losses, while also enhancing the resilience and international competitiveness of Taiwan's dairy industry.
