Sudha Dairy Expands Export Focus to Gulf and Southeast Asia
The Bihar State Milk Cooperative Federation (COMFED), which operates under the Sudha brand, is significantly expanding its international market presence by focusing on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Southeast Asia. This follows successful pilot exports to North America in 2025, where products like ghee and ethnic sweets were introduced.
The strategic shift comes as Sudha Dairy aims to transition fr om trial consignments to a sustained export model, with the objective of enhancing farmer revenue through parity with global prices. The expansion is notably supported by Bihar's increasing self-reliance in milk production, with plans to establish a dairy cooperative society in every one of the state’s 24,248 targeted villages.
Bihar’s dairy sector has been growing at an annual rate of 5.7%, outpacing the global average. COMFED is also investing in infrastructure, commissioning 30 MT fully automatic powder plants to facilitate high-capacity processing for consistent exports.
The geopolitical climate in the Middle East presents both challenges and opportunities. Although conflict has disrupted traditional shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz, it has also sidelined regional competitors such as Iran, which is experiencing supply disruptions and sanctions. This opens a market vacuum in places like Iraq, the UAE, and Afghanistan, which Indian cooperatives like Sudha are well positioned to fill.
Sudha's entry into these markets is expected to heighten competition in the ethnic dairy segment. Participation in events like Gulfood 2026 in Dubai highlights a focus on securing high-value contracts in the GCC, wh ere demand bifurcation sees wealthier nations stocking up on storable commodities amid regional instability.
For Middle Eastern buyers, the reliability of supply chains is becoming more critical amid ongoing conflicts, making Sudha’s logistical advantages and overland-to-sea routes from India’s East Coast an attractive alternative to European shipments.
