Stabilisation of Farmgate Milk Prices Amid Improving Dairy Market Conditions

Renewed optimism in the dairy markets has led several major milk processors to maintain current farmgate milk prices. This follows several months of successive reductions in prices. Recent data shows that wholesale dairy values increased for the fifth consecutive time at the latest Global Dairy Trade (GDT) auction held on March 3, reaching an average of $4,301 per tonne (£3,214 per tonne).

Industry indicators such as the Actual Milk Price Equivalent (Ampe) and the Milk for Cheese Value Equivalent (MCVE) have also shown gains over the past month. The Ampe rose by 2.7 pence per litre to 32.8 pence per litre in February, while the MCVE saw a marginal increase to 32.7 pence per litre.

Brian Richardson, head of agriculture at Virgin Money, expressed encouragement over these developments in the dairy market. These changes reflect a broader trend of recovery in dairy sector performance, which has been under pressure from various market forces.
