Average milk yield in the US in 2022 was 10,886 tons

According to the Association, raw milk production in 2022 in the United States exceeded 100 million tons and amounted to 103.5 million tons of raw milk. The country produces 11% of the world's raw milk.
The US dairy herd includes 9.4 million cows - that's 3% of the world's population. Thus, the average production per head in the United States was 10,886 tons.
As a result, according to William Lu, the United States topped the list of countries with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, surpassing New Zealand in this indicator.
It is also worth noting the growing trend in the US cow population. In 2005, there were 9 million dairy cows in the United States.
The largest milk producers in the country continue to be the states of California (18.5 million tons) and Wisconsin (14.1 million tons). Also among the leaders in raw milk production are the states of Idaho, Texas, New York, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New Mexico and Washington.
An important condition for the sustainable development of dairy farming in the United States remains the preservation of traditional foundations and small-scale production. In 2022, 55% of dairy farms had up to 50 animals. 30% of farms contain from 50 to 100 animals.
Thus, the overwhelming number of farms in the country - 85% - have a livestock of no more than 100 animals.
The number of dairy complexes with a livestock of more than 1000 animals in the United States does not exceed 5% of the total number of farms in the country.
