Spanish Dairy Farmers Seek Higher Milk Prices

Unión de Uniones is seeking an upward revision of the prices set in milk contracts that are scheduled to be renewed at the beginning of October. The organisation’s request concerns the terms paid to milk producers in Spain.

The group identified diesel, electricity and animal feed as costs that have become more expensive. It linked its request for a contract review to these increases in the expenses incurred by dairy farmers.

Unión de Uniones said the price received by producers must cover their actual costs of production. Its position places the level of the contractual milk price against the expenses required to produce the milk.

The organisation’s appeal is directed at the negotiations surrounding contracts due for renewal in early October. It is asking for those agreements to be revised upwards rather than renewed at their existing price level.

The costs cited by the group cover fuel used by farms, electricity and feed for animals. The statement did not provide figures for the increases in any of the three categories, nor did it specify a requested price per litre.

It also did not give details of the number of contracts involved or identify individual buyers. The central demand was that the price paid to producers reflect their effective production costs when the agreements are renewed.
