Smart Eartag Innovation by UAT Students Transforms Cattle Management

Students from the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas (UAT) have introduced an innovative solution to improve cattle management through a smart eartag. This device, which utilizes RFID technology combined with sensors, is designed to enhance real-time traceability and management of livestock.

The project aims to tackle significant issues in the cattle industry, such as insufficient traceability and monitoring inefficiencies. The smart eartag captures essential data like weight, health history, body temperature, and activity levels, transmitting this information to a mobile application for immediate access by producers and technicians.

In addition to monitoring health and activity, the system incorporates digital geofences. These geofences provide alerts if an animal strays outside a designated area, thus improving herd security and mitigating economic losses from unauthorized movements. The integration of automated reports, productive analysis, and reproductive management calendars further enhances the platform's utility in herd management.

Driven by a team of accounting students under faculty guidance, the initiative highlights the academic capacity to generate applicable technological solutions in the field. The project has been recognized for its methodological rigor, earning a spot for publication in an international scientific journal, which underscores its practical relevance and potential impact.

This development positions UAT and its students as emerging players in the intersection of IoT technology, animal traceability, and efficient livestock management.
