Slovenia's Pomurske Mlekarne Launches Aluminum-Free Aseptic Milk Cartons
Pomurske Mlekarne, a prominent dairy producer in Slovenia, has taken a significant step in sustainable packaging by launching its first milk product in SIG Terra MidiBloc Alu-free + Full barrier aseptic cartons. This innovative packaging solution, developed in collaboration with SIG, eliminates the aluminum layer, providing full barrier protection while reducing environmental impact.
The new packaging material is composed of more than 80% paper and employs an ultra-thin polymer coating to protect products from oxygen, light, moisture, and aroma loss. This technological advancement not only decreases the number of raw materials used from three to two but also significantly lowers the carbon footprint of the cartons.
Anthony Tomažin, director at Pomurske Mlekarne, emphasized the company's commitment to quality and innovation during their 80-year history. He stated, “Our close cooperation with SIG has enabled us to be first to market in Slovenia with SIG Terra Alu-free + Full barrier packaging material – a pivotal move forward in sustainable packaging for the dairy industry.”
The packaging material is designed to run on existing SIG filling lines seamlessly, allowing for quick and easy transitions between standard and alu-free packaging options. This flexibility in production ensures that the new packaging does not compromise on performance or efficiency.
SIG, a pioneer in aluminum-free aseptic packaging since 2010, has sold over 4 billion packs without an aluminum layer to date. The introduction of the SIG Terra Alu-free + Full barrier packaging material marks a new milestone, making it suitable for a broader range of oxygen-sensitive products such as fruit juices, nectars, and flavored milk.
Jovana Pinter, head of sales South-East Europe at SIG, highlighted the shared values and commitment to sustainability between SIG and Pomurske Mlekarne, stating, “The first launch of aseptic cartons made of SIG Terra Alu-free + Full barrier packaging material will offer consumers an even more sustainable packaging solution with no compromise on full barrier protection or shelf life.”
