Milk production in the 24 leading U.S. states experienced a marginal decrease in December, totaling 18.1 billion pounds, down 0.1 percent from the same period in 2022. The revised production for November, standing at 17.3 billion pounds, marked a 0.6 percent decline from November 2022.

The revision represented a negligible decrease of 14 million pounds, accounting for less than 0.1 percent of the preliminary production estimate for November.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the average production per cow in these states reached 2,030 pounds in December, a mere one-pound increase from December 2022. The total number of milk cows on farms in the 24 states amounted to 8.9 million head, showing a decrease of 17,000 head compared to December 2022 but remaining unchanged from November 2023.
For the October-December quarter, U.S. milk production reached 55.6 billion pounds, exhibiting a modest 0.6 percent decline compared to the corresponding quarter in 2023. The average number of milk cows in the U.S. during this quarter was 9.36 million head, reflecting a decrease of 16,000 head from the July-September quarter and 44,000 head less than the same period in the previous year.
