Sigma Alimentos launches protein-focused response to GLP-1 drugs

Mexico-based Sigma Alimentos is using its corporate acceleration platform, Tastech, to identify technologies that could adapt its portfolio to changing eating patterns associated with GLP-1 medicines such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro. The company is seeking developments in food technology with high nutritional value, including products designed around greater protein density.

The initiative covers the 17 countries where Sigma has manufacturing and distribution operations. Startups selected through Tastech move into pilot testing lasting between 16 and 20 weeks at analytical development centres. After technical validation, Sigma assesses financial viability, industrial scalability and logistical compatibility before considering a commercial launch.

The company’s dairy and refrigerated operations include fresh and matured cheeses, yoghurt and processed meats. Its plants can add mixing and homogenisation equipment to existing dairy production lines, allowing traditional dairy matrices to be fortified with protein isolates and micronutrients, according to the source report.

The report describes lower demand for sugary snacks and fried foods among people taking GLP-1 treatments, alongside interest in smaller portions with more casein, lactalbumin and calcium. It identifies low-fat panela cheese, lean cottage cheese, strained yoghurt and lactose-free dairy drinks as possible formats for products aimed at this demand. Flavour development and lighter, more fluid textures are also listed as priorities.

Weight loss associated with GLP-1 treatment can include a reduction in lean mass. The article says patients may lose as much as 40% of their weight as lean mass if they do not consume enough essential amino acids, and links this nutritional issue to demand for protein-enriched foods. It also notes that ingredients such as whey-protein concentrates with 80% protein and protein isolates with 90% protein carry high international market premiums.

Food companies are working with startups on precision fermentation and clean-extraction processes as they develop functional products, the report says. For Mexican dairy producers, increased use of high-protein formulations could raise demand for raw milk with higher total-solids and natural-protein content. Industrial cheese makers could also channel more whey into concentration and drying operations, while differentiated payments at the farm gate may reward milk with characteristics suited to cheese production.
