SIG has introduced an innovative aluminum-layer-free packaging solution for multi-serve aseptic cartons, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint significantly.

SIG has launched the world's first aluminum-layer-free full barrier solution for multi-serve aseptic cartons, extending their successful innovation fr om the single-serve market wh ere over 300 million packs have been sold in China since 2023. The new packaging reduces the carbon footprint by up to 61% when combined with forest-based polymers, as the cartons comprise more than 80% paper, simplifying the structure to two main raw materials. Crucially, it retains the full barrier protection and shelf life of traditional solutions, running seamlessly on SIG’s existing filling lines.
SIG aims to raise the paper content in their cartons to 90% by 2030, reflecting their commitment to sustainability and reducing the overall environmental impact. Christoph Wegener, Chief Markets Officer at SIG, stated, "At SIG, we are leading the industry transition to alu-layer-free aseptic carton packaging materials..." This innovation is poised to benefit a broad range of beverage categories without sacrificing quality or performance, according to Gavin Steiner, SIG’s Chief Technology Officer.
