Severe Weather Challenges Dairy Farmers in Rio Grande do Sul

Recent severe weather events in Rio Grande do Sul have severely impacted dairy farmers, leading to significant infrastructure damage. In one notable instance, a farmer with over 40 years of experience and more than 40 lactating cows decided to cease milk production due to the impracticality of rebuilding after the storms.

According to the Gadolando association, the issues extend beyond physical destruction. Farmers are struggling financially to reconstruct their properties while still managing existing debts and financial obligations. As a result, Gadolando is pushing for the inclusion of affected farmers in renegotiated financial agreements and banking obligations that are already available to victims of such events.

The association also proposes the establishment of a permanent federal fund to support rural properties impacted by climatic events. This fund would provide aid for losses related to animals, facilities, and production capacity, enabling families to restore their operations.

The Gadolando believes that such mechanisms could mitigate the economic impact of disasters on the dairy sector, preventing more farmers from leaving the industry due to the inability to restart.
