Scalable Methane Eradication System Proven Effective in Danish Field Trial
On August 12, 2025, a significant advancement in the fight against agricultural methane emissions was reported from a field trial in Denmark. Ambient Carbon's Methane Eradication Photochemical System (MEPS) has showcased the ability to eliminate up to 90% of dilute methane emissions from the air in dairy barns, a milestone verified for the first time on a commercial scale. Utilizing a patented gas-phase photochemical process, the system was implemented in a 250-cow open-sided dairy barn within a 40-foot shipping container, marking a substantial leap from prior laboratory tests.
Matthew S. Johnson, Co-founder and Chief Science Officer at Ambient Carbon, emphasized the system's success in oxidizing methane across various concentration levels, ranging from 4.3 ppm to 44 ppm in real agricultural conditions. As the only viable solution for eradicating methane at concentrations below 1000 ppm, MEPS operates non-invasively, preserving normal barn activities, including milk production. Furthermore, it provides ancillary benefits such as ammonia and odor removal, and the production of sterile water vapor and fertilizer, helping reduce operational costs for farmers.
The trial received support from noteworthy partners including Danone North America, Benton Group Dairies, Hofmansgave Foundation, and academic institutions like the University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University, all under the auspices of the PERMA project, backed by Innovation Fund Denmark and AgriFoodTure.
Endorsements from industrial leaders highlight the system's potential. Jessie Copeland of Danone North America and Chris Williams from Benton Dairies lauded the innovation, projecting it as a cornerstone for regenerative agriculture and sustainable farming. Dave Kenney, CEO of Ambient Carbon, noted that achieving such performance benchmarks heralds MEPS as a transformative solution ready for broad adoption in the agriculture sector.
