Saputo Dairy Australia launches high-protein UHT milk
Saputo Dairy Australia, the Australian processing division of the multinational dairy group, has introduced an expanded portfolio of high-protein ultra-high-temperature milk for domestic retail distribution. The range is sold under established household labels and is designed for ambient storage.
The products contain 15 grams of protein in each 300-millilitre serving. That is a 50% increase over conventional standardised full-cream long-life milk. The formulation uses naturally occurring milk solids rather than artificial protein powders.
Processing and formats
The manufacturing process uses membrane ultrafiltration to separate and concentrate protein fractions already present in raw liquid milk. The approach is intended to retain the milk’s taste, viscosity and broader functional properties while meeting clean-label ingredient requirements.
The portfolio includes conventional whole milk and products positioned for digestive wellness. Packaging comprises one-litre cartons and 200-millilitre portion packs. A lactose-free version is available in a one-litre format; it combines enzymatic lactose hydrolysis with the protein-concentration process.
Ambient distribution
Ultra-heat treatment allows the products to be stored without refrigerated distribution and gives them an extended shelf life. Ambient processing can also provide processors with flexibility in handling seasonal changes in raw-milk volumes, including the diversion of milk from powder production during periods of higher supply.
The shelf-stable format can be distributed through export channels in the Asia-Pacific region, where functional ambient beverages occupy retail space. The investment comes as processors face pressure on conventional white-milk margins from retail discounting and higher farmgate costs, while developing differentiated dairy products with higher protein content.
