Saputo Dairy UK Suspends Milk Collection Amid Animal Cruelty Allegations
A Cornish-based dairy produce giant, Saputo Dairy UK, has announced a suspension of milk collections from a family farm in St Tudy after an animal rights campaigner presented video evidence allegedly showing abuse of livestock. This drastic measure followed the release of footage by activist Joey Carbstrong, portraying farm workers involved in aggressive actions against cattle, such as pushing, kicking, and chasing. The allegations extend to Trevear Farm, owned by Richard Thomas, alongside Polshea Farm owned by Mark Button, which faced previous environmental violations resolved with a financial settlement.

Saputo Dairy UK, known for producing Davidstow Cheddar and Cathedral City cheese, expressed their commitment to animal welfare and the unsettling nature of the footage, stating, "The footage shared is disturbing and offends the values of our customers, consumers and employees alike. We have immediately suspended milk collection from this farm while we complete an investigation." The inquiry will be thorough, involving independent experts and validation by animal protection authorities.

The National Farmers Union (NFU) issued a response on Mr. Button's behalf, emphasizing the importance of herd welfare and collaboration with regulatory authorities, asserting no welfare concerns were found during the recent scrutiny of farms. With the investigation in progress, Saputo Dairy UK aims for a swift resolution while maintaining strict ethical standards in their supply chain.
