Rio Grande do Sul Confirms Avian Flu in Subsistence Birds
Highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed in birds kept for subsistence in Selbach, in the Alto Jacuí region of Rio Grande do Sul. The diagnosis was validated on Monday the 5th by the Federal Agricultural Defence Laboratory in Campinas, São Paulo (LFDA-SP).
The investigation began after a report of bird deaths was filed on October 1. A team from the Department of Animal Health Surveillance and Defence, part of the state Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Sustainable Production and Irrigation, visited the site and collected samples.
The samples were sent to a reference unit of the World Organisation for Animal Health. Following confirmation, the Official Veterinary Service of Rio Grande do Sul said it would inspect 68 properties within a three-kilometre radius of the outbreak. Local residents will also receive guidance on sanitary procedures.
The state agriculture secretariat is asking people to report suspected cases promptly to the regional agricultural-defence service or through WhatsApp at (51) 98445-2033. Reports are requested when birds show breathing problems, neurological changes or sudden deaths involving large numbers of animals. The instruction applies to suspected cases on any property.
The authorities also advise people not to touch birds that are ill, injured or dead. The secretariat said that eating poultry meat and eggs does not pose a risk because the infection is not transmitted through those products. The immediate response is focused on inspections and sanitary guidance in the area surrounding the site where the bird deaths were reported.
