Pune sees Rs 70 lakh fraud, milk price rise and rain watch

A 69-year-old lawyer in Pune has filed a complaint over an alleged online fraud in which callers posing as officials reportedly threatened and manipulated her. She is reported to have lost Rs 70 lakh in the case.

The alleged scheme used prolonged phone or video interactions and claims that the victim was under investigation. The callers reportedly presented the transfer of money as necessary to avoid arrest or legal proceedings. The case involved the so-called digital-arrest method, in which fraudsters use false identities and official-sounding threats to pressure targets.

Milk prices across Maharashtra rose by Rs 2 per litre on August 11. The increase applies to both cow and buffalo milk, affecting household purchases as well as businesses such as restaurants and tea shops that use milk regularly.

The higher retail price also applies to milk-based products and preparations, including tea, curd and sweets, although the report does not provide revised prices for those items. The change comes as households and food businesses adjust to the new rates.

Rainfall in Pune has been relatively limited in recent days compared with heavier spells earlier in the monsoon. In the 24 hours to 8.30am on Saturday, Shivajinagar recorded 0.8mm of rain, while some ghat areas received substantially more.

The differing rainfall levels have kept weather conditions under observation in the city and surrounding areas. The report also refers to the evacuation of residents in Pune's Ektanagari amid flooding, alongside the continuing monitoring of monsoon conditions.
