The Puducherry government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance milk production and improve livestock management for the fiscal year 2025, aiming to achieve self-sufficiency and elevate the genetic quality of livestock within the union territory.
Milk Procurement and Production Enhancements
Milk Procurement: The government has set a target to procure 2.34 crore litres of milk from Co-operative Milk Producer Societies throughout the year.
Incentives: A 5% incentive on the value of procured milk is proposed in the 2024 Budget to motivate higher production volumes.
Subsidies: The Pondicherry Co-operative Milk Producer’s Union (PCMPU) will offer a 75% subsidy on cattle feed to members of the Primary Milk Producers’ Co-operative Societies, aiming to reduce milk production costs effectively.
Livestock Development Initiatives
Cow Purchase Subsidy: The government plans to offer a 50% subsidy for the purchase of Single Milch Cows to 1,000 farmers to further self-sufficiency in milk production.
Genetic Improvement: With a budget of ₹76.56 crore allocated to the Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare Department, the government proposes to produce 1,000 In-Vitro Fertilised embryos. This initiative, free of cost under a 100% subsidy, aims to yield high genetic potential female calves with a 90% accuracy rate.
Veterinary Infrastructure: Upgrades from Key Village Units to Minor Veterinary Dispensaries are planned to enhance the quality of veterinary services and infrastructure.
Breeding and Feed Programs
Rashtriya Gokul Mission: The government will continue using Sex Sorted Semen under this national mission to increase breeding efficiency and the production of female calves.
Feed Production Support: The distribution of Pellet Making Machines at a 100% subsidy to 400 farmers is intended to promote self-reliance in feed production.
Additional Agricultural Initiatives
The Pondicherry Co-operative Sugar Mill in Lingareddipalayam is set to be reopened with private assistance for ethanol and sugar production.
Loans extended to some Co-operative Societies last fiscal year may be converted into grants, provided the societies can generate at least 10% of the amount to be converted.
To better support farmers, compensation for the death of uninsured cows has been raised from ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 starting this fiscal year.
