Canada's dairy sector is urging protection against trade repercussions and promoting its environmental and quality standards.
Protecting Canada’s Dairy Industry
Canada needs to protect its own dairy industry and the many people employed who are working to feed communities and provide quality products that meet regulated standards.

Organizations representing dairy farmers voice concerns over trade repercussions from agreements like the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA), which provide U.S. dairy with increased access to Canadian markets. Despite exporting $877.5 million in dairy products to Canada, the U.S. imported significantly less Canadian dairy.

This access challenges the stability of Canadian dairy, which operates under a different regulatory framework, prohibiting antibiotics and growth hormones in milk. Canadian dairy farmers operate under supply management, unlike their American counterparts.

Dairy Farmers of Canada emphasize the need for government support to safeguard the industry, which is vital for domestic food security. They argue that maintaining strict quality standards — like limiting somatic cell counts in milk — is integral to ensuring public health and environmental sustainability.
