On March 30, a conference was held in Beijing to promote the work of the National Alliance for Innovation in Dairy Science and Technology in 2024. As reported by Farmers Daily, a Chinese agricultural publication, conference experts revealed that in 2023, 71 dairy companies in 28 provinces implemented projects for the production of high-quality milk, and the share of high-quality pasteurized milk production in the total volume of pasteurized milk in the country increased to 97%.
Production of milk in China in 2023 increased by 6.7% to 41.9 million tons
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, milk production in China in 2023 amounted to approximately 41.97 million tons, increasing by 6.7% annually. However, due to the dual influence of consumption and population size, milk consumption is expected to decrease by approximately 1.6% over the year.

In terms of milk consumption per capita, milk consumption in China remains at a low level. In 2023, milk consumption per capita will reach 41.3 kg, which is only equivalent to 22.6%-37.7% of the level recommended by the "Nutritional Guidelines for Chinese Residents." With increasing incomes and awareness of nutrition and health, there are still opportunities for further growth in milk consumption in the future.

Wei Lin, Director of the Department of Dairy Products at the Livestock and Veterinary Bureau of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, stated that given the current situation of dairy industry development, it is necessary to focus on addressing shortcomings and improving the efficiency of the dairy industry.

According to the expert, it is important for the industry to focus on conducting research on key technologies, promoting technological breakthroughs, and comprehensively improving the efficiency of dairy farming. Secondly, efforts should be directed towards eliminating existing obstacles and bottlenecks in the development of the dairy industry, optimizing production organization models, innovatively allocating resources, promoting technological innovations, and optimizing and modernizing the entire dairy product production process. Thirdly, it is necessary to strive to increase consumption levels and constantly enhance the adaptability of the supply system to domestic demand.
