Producers Monetize Dairy Manure with Unique On-Farm Business Models

The Midwest Manure Summit held in Green Bay, Wisconsin, showcased various strategies employed by dairy producers to transform manure into a significant source of revenue. Noteworthy panelists included Scott Hynds of Aqua Innovations LLC, John Rosenow, co-owner of Rosenow Dairy and Cowsmo Compost, and Brent Cousin, general manager of Holsum Dairies.

Hynds collaborates with dairy producers utilizing membrane technology to convert manure into clean water and fertilizer products. Rosenow manages a 600-cow dairy, where manure is processed into potting soil and compost. Meanwhile, Cousin oversees operations at two farm sites housing 8,500 cows, employing anaerobic digesters for renewable natural gas production.

The panel also addressed challenges and successes in the field. Rosenow highlighted regulatory compliance, marketing, and workforce rhetoric as ongoing issues. Cousin emphasized the rising costs associated with manure handling and transportation, noting the strategic application benefits of manure composition.

In terms of value generation, Hynds pointed to nutrient recovery and public relations benefits, while Rosenow and Cousin discussed the financial returns from compost and biogas production. Their insights underscore the economic potential and environmental responsibility of innovative manure management.

Despite the hurdles, the consensus among panelists was clear: sustainable manure management is not only environmentally sound but also financially viable, providing a diversified income stream for dairy producers.
