In a strategic move to enhance its national footprint, Prairie Farms Dairy, a farmer-owned cooperative based in Edwardsville, Illinois, has acquired SmithFoods, an Ohio-based dairy company. Effective immediately, this acquisition encompasses SmithFoods’ manufacturing facilities and operations, broadening Prairie Farms' reach in the dairy and non-dairy product markets.
While the terms of the deal remain undisclosed, both companies emphasize a commitment to a seamless integration with no interruptions in manufacturing, delivery, or daily operations.
"As a farmer-owned cooperative, we’re always open to exploring opportunities that will return value to our dairy farmers," said Prairie Farms CEO Matt McClelland. This acquisition aligns with Prairie Farms' goal of expanding their offerings while creating value for their farmer members.
SmithFoods, headquartered in Orrville, Ohio, will continue to operate under its established name, with no anticipated changes to its well-known Smith’s brand. The Ohio company, which employs approximately 400 people, produces a variety of dairy and non-dairy items, including juices, teas, and Ajoyo almond milk. The company’s products reach customers through retail and direct store distribution, food service, private label, and co-manufacturing channels.
This acquisition reflects Prairie Farms’ ongoing strategy to diversify its product portfolio and expand its market reach. With both companies focusing on maintaining high-quality standards and efficient service, the transition is expected to be smooth, benefiting both Prairie Farms' cooperative members and SmithFoods' customers.
