Pizza Hut's Sustainability Journey: Investing in Sustainably Sourced Cheese with Dairy Farmers of America
Teaming up with Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), a farmer-owned cooperative representing over 10,000 farm families, Pizza Hut has embarked on a journey to enhance the sustainability of its cheese production. This collaboration has yielded promising results, including a noteworthy 10% reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity from the milk used in Pizza Hut's cheese production.

Rachel Antalek, Pizza Hut's Global Chief Food Innovation Officer, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasizing Pizza Hut's dedication to delivering the best pizza while prioritizing sustainability. Since the initiation of the partnership in 2022, Pizza Hut aimed to source 50% of its dairy from farms participating in sustainability initiatives, achieving this milestone two years ahead of schedule in 2023.

Jackie Klippenstein, Senior Vice President and Chief Government and Industry Relations Officer at DFA, highlighted the importance of collaboration with partners like Pizza Hut in implementing innovative technologies to reduce emissions on farms. Technology plays a pivotal role in this endeavor, with initiatives such as providing farmers with SCiO cups to optimize cow diets and minimize methane emissions.

Building on the success in the U.S., Pizza Hut is extending its sustainability efforts globally. In New Zealand, a three-year project focuses on enhancing farm efficiency, while in the United Kingdom, efforts aim to reduce methane production in cows by improving feed quality. These initiatives align with Pizza Hut's broader climate strategy, which includes a commitment to decrease GHG emissions by 46% by 2030.

James Watts, Pizza Hut's Global Chief People & ESG Officer, underscored the brand's dedication to scaling sustainable practices across its global footprint. As Pizza Hut continues its sustainability journey, it not only benefits the environment but also supports partners like DFA in achieving their sustainability goals.
