Operational Adjustments Boost Dairy Farm Profits in New Zealand

Dairy farms in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions of New Zealand are witnessing potential financial gains through targeted operational adjustments. According to AgFirst CEO, these changes could lead to an impressive 35% profit increase. On average, these adjustments translate to an extra $900 per hectare in cash surplus, amounting to an additional $123,000 per farm.

Across the 4,100 dairy farms in the regions, the adoption of these improvements could inject an estimated $490 million into the local agricultural economy. This estimation is based on averaged physical and financial data collected from 22 representative survey farms in the area.

The push for increased efficiency comes amid rising cost pressures in key input categories over the past year. Notably, the price of palm kernel expeller (PKE) surged by 31% to $420 per tonne. Fertilizer costs also saw significant increases, with superphosphate rising 22% to $599 per tonne and urea jumping 50% to $1,396 per tonne. Additionally, escalating fuel and energy prices have further driven up working expenses, necessitating effective resource management to maintain profit margins.

To achieve a 5% production increase, AgFirst CEO Allen outlined several operational strategies. These include optimizing pasture utilization, implementing strategic supplementary feeding, improving fertilizer planning, enhancing labor efficiency, and employing AgTech tools for data-driven decision-making. For instance, increasing pasture growth from 13.6 to 14.3 tonnes of dry matter per hectare can yield an additional 90 tonnes of dry matter, resulting in approximately 7,166 kg of milk solids in extra production on a standard farm.
