Oberweis Dairy Files for Bankruptcy, Owes Over $4M
The voluntary petition, filed on Friday, underscores the challenges faced by the long-standing dairy institution. Oberweis Dairy disclosed its indebtedness exceeding $4 million in unsecured claims to its top 20 creditors, including notable amounts owed to entities such as the Cook County treasurer and a Hudson-based transportation firm, the latter accounting for the largest portion of the debt.

Founded in 1915 by Peter Oberweis, an Aurora dairy farmer renowned for selling milk from his horse-drawn wagon, Oberweis Dairy has since evolved into an emblematic establishment. The company's legacy extends to 1951, marked by the inauguration of its inaugural ice cream shop in Aurora.

Oberweis Dairy, Inc. remains under the stewardship of the Oberweis family, notably associated with Republican state politician Jim Oberweis. Despite repeated attempts, spokespersons for the company were unavailable for immediate comment as of Saturday evening.
