Nutritional Differences Highlighted in Milk vs. Plant-Based Beverages Debate

Ana Luzón, a specialist in Nutrition and Dietetics, has reignited the debate on the nutritional value of whole milk compared to plant-based beverages. Luzón challenges the perception that plant-based drinks are healthier than cow's milk, emphasizing that they are not nutritionally equivalent. She notes that whole milk has been linked to cholesterol issues due to its saturated fat content, but recent research presents a more complex picture.

Luzón points out that dairy fats include compounds like butyric acid, which may have anti-inflammatory properties and contribute to satiety. Furthermore, various studies have not established a direct link between whole dairy consumption and increased cardiovascular risk. Some research even suggests potential benefits in preventing obesity and type 2 diabetes.

One of Luzón's main arguments is that whole milk provides high-quality proteins with all essential amino acids, whereas many plant-based beverages offer significantly lower protein levels, with exceptions like soy. Additionally, whole milk naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, and highly bioavailable calcium, whereas many plant-based drinks require fortification to include these nutrients.

The nutritionist also critiques certain 'barista' versions of plant-based drinks, which often include refined oils and stabilizers to mimic milk's texture in coffee. Luzón advises that a daily glass of milk is generally not problematic for adults and suggests complementing diets with fermented dairy products like natural yogurts and quality cheeses.

Economically, in a context of inflation and budget constraints, whole milk remains an accessible source of protein, calcium, and energy, while many plant-based options are significantly more expensive. The debate on milk versus plant-based beverages remains open, but Luzón stresses the importance of understanding their different nutritional profiles, which do not always make them interchangeable.
