Nigeria Launches Campaign to Combat Dairy Nutrition Misinformation

The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with nutrition experts and development partners, has launched a nationwide campaign titled the Choose Milk Campaign. This initiative aims to combat misinformation about dairy nutrition and help consumers make informed decisions regarding their dairy consumption.

The campaign was officially unveiled in Lagos by stakeholders from the Danish Dairy Board, the European Union, and Nigeria's Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. Representatives from the Ministry of Livestock Development and other key figures in the nutrition sector also participated.

The Choose Milk Campaign is designed to raise awareness about the nutritional benefits of dairy milk and to educate the public about the differences between real milk and creamers commonly found in the Nigerian market. Lars Jensen, Senior Project Manager at the Danish Dairy Board, emphasized the need to address widespread misconceptions about dairy products and improve nutrition literacy among consumers. He stated, "It is important for consumers to understand that creamers do not offer the key nutrients found in dairy milk."

Jette Bjerrum, the Danish Consul General to Nigeria, highlighted the necessity of strong partnerships between governments, healthcare institutions, development organizations, and industry stakeholders to enhance nutrition outcomes. She noted that sustainable progress in nutrition education and dairy development can be achieved only through such collaborations.

The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, supported the initiative, aligning it with the Federal Government's objectives to improve national nutrition and strengthen Nigeria's dairy industry. The campaign's goal is to promote sustainable dairy consumption and strengthen the local dairy value chain.

Mrs Olufowobi-Yusuf Adeola, Director and Head of Food and Drug Services at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, emphasized the importance of nutrition education in the face of numerous food options and varying nutrition claims. She stated, "Nutrition remains one of the most important public health priorities for any nation seeking sustainable growth and development."

The campaign is set to run for three years, employing various outreach methods such as community engagements, school-based educational programs, television and radio initiatives, social media campaigns, and other public enlightenment activities to promote informed nutritional choices among Nigerians.
