Nicaragua is witnessing a remarkable boost in its dairy sector, with the municipality of Santo Tomás leading the charge. The collaboration between local authorities and the private sector has been pivotal, resulting in a notable increase in milk production and exports. In 2024, the country's cattle herd grew by 0.44% to 5.85 million heads, underscoring the importance of this sector to the national economy. Furthermore, dairy production jumped by 1.6%, with over 380 million gallons of milk produced in the past year.
The cooperative Riolac plays a crucial role in transforming and exporting dairy products, accounting for a daily collection of 14,000 to 15,000 gallons, with 90% of it exported to El Salvador. This cooperative model ensures fair payment across the board, regardless of individual production levels.
