New Zealand's Beef Farms Embrace Smart Collar Technology
The introduction of Halter's Beef Pro collars marks a significant shift in New Zealand's livestock management, as beef producers begin to integrate technology traditionally used in dairy farming. The smart collars, which incorporate virtual fencing and satellite connectivity, are designed to enhance pasture management and track cattle activity in real-time.
Within two months of its release, 500 beef operations have connected to Halter's satellite solution, with 185 fully integrating the advanced software. This rapid adoption is attributed to the collars' ability to merge satellite forage data with livestock behavior monitoring, allowing for dynamic and data-driven grazing strategies.
At Spring Valley beef farm in Masterton, the use of these collars has led to a projected 12.5% increase in feed conversion efficiency, reducing the feed-to-meat ratio from 24 to 21 kilograms of dry matter per kilogram of carcass weight. This improvement is facilitated by continuous rumination monitoring, providing detailed health insights for cattle management.
Greenhill Farming in Northland has employed the collars across 600 Friesian bulls, transitioning from biennial to daily pasture changes. This approach has enabled the farm to increase carcass weight yield from 280 to 360 kilograms per hectare, with future targets set even higher.
The technology supports the segmentation of large properties into digital 'farmlets,' each with tailored rotation schedules and growth targets. This capability not only enhances forage consumption but also optimizes the overall profitability and environmental sustainability of grass-based beef production.
