New Dairy-Beef Project Unveiled by Certified Irish Angus and Partners

In an ambitious move to enhance dairy-beef integration, Certified Irish Angus, ABP Food Group, and Bandon Co-op are set to host an informative event detailing their new collaborative project. Scheduled for January 23 at The Munster Arms Hotel in Bandon, Co. Cork, the gathering aims to highlight the synergistic benefits of the initiative for both dairy and beef farmers.

The objective of this joint venture is the production of superior Angus-cross calves that boast higher-than-average Commercial Beef Values (CBVs). This initiative seeks to add substantial value to both dairy and beef agricultural sectors. The breeding program, which kicked off in Spring 2024, places emphasis on improving the genetic beef merit of Angus calves born from dairy cows in the Bandon region.

Twenty select dairy farmers from Bandon Co-op are participants in this initiative, utilizing three elite Angus bulls: Drumcrow Tribesman, HW Lord Horatio, and Coolrain Patriarch. All calves from this program are required to be genotyped to ensure precise CBV assessments.

The event will also offer insights into the Advantage Beef Programme, focusing on producing genetically superior calves and the requisite care practices essential to maximizing their potential. Key topics include the Elite Breed Improvement Programme, genetic enhancement, and best practices for calf transition from dairy to beef farms.

Charles Smith of Certified Irish Angus emphasized the organization's commitment to progressive beef production, while Stephen Connolly from ABP Food Group highlighted the critical role of collaboration in advancing sustainable agricultural systems.

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with industry experts and explore how these innovations may benefit their own farming operations.
