New Zealand Farming Industry Faces Climate Change Challenges
An authority in the field has expressed fear that poorly strategized responses to climate change might jeopardize the capability of New Zealand's farming enterprises. The worry is that these strategies could result in many farming businesses being unable to continue operations, thereby affecting the broader agriculture sector.
"We only need to look at the stance that banks are taking regarding funding fuel stations to realize that the flow-on effect could be catastrophic for farmers, either directly or indirectly," remarked the industry insider.
There's hesitation in commenting on Fonterra's plans to divest its consumer businesses in New Zealand, Australia, and Sri Lanka. The veteran believes that Fonterra's core strength lies in being a preferred ingredients supplier for major brands but also cautions against letting go of longstanding brands like Anmum, which have become synonymous with New Zealand's dairy industry.
Looking back, one of her career highlights includes winning the New Zealand Sharemilker of the Year competition with her husband in 1994. Being awarded a Nuffield Scholarship in 1998 also ranks highly in her achievements. However, she emphasizes that the most rewarding aspect has been the opportunity to meet incredible people who have become lifelong friends through the farming community.
"Farming is one of the few industries I know where people are so willing to share knowledge and experience to help others. It has been amazing," she reflects.
