New Zealand Delegation Explores Collaborative Opportunities in Punjab’s Dairy Sector

A high-profile delegation from New Zealand, comprising notable experts such as Professor Garry Udy from MPI, Professor Nicolas Lopez from Massey University, and Dr. David Hayman from TRG/ABS, met with Rahul Bhandari, Principal Secretary of the Punjab Animal Husbandry Department. Also present was Dr. R.O. Gupta from NDDB.

The primary focus of the meeting was to strengthen ties in animal breeding and the sustainability of small-holder dairy systems. Bhandari provided insights into the ongoing efforts of the National Dairy Plan-1, aimed at enhancing genetic variants in cattle and buffaloes through advanced progeny testing and selective breeding mechanisms.

The National Dairy Plan-1, initiated in July 2013, aims to breed high genetic merit (HGM) bulls, optimizing semen stations and streamlining the evaluation processes for bull sires and young bulls. Initiatives are already in motion across 160 institutions in Patiala, Sangrur, and Barnala districts of Punjab.

The New Zealand delegation visited several project villages like Chaswal, Saholi, and Laut in Patiala, delving deep into current management practices and engaging directly with local farmers. They examined successful aspects of the Murrah Progeny Testing Project and expressed satisfaction with Punjab's progress in the dairy sector.

Accompanied by Punjab's Director of Animal Husbandry, Dr. G.S. Bedi, the visit also saw Deputy Collaboration Coordinators like Dr. Amit Khurana and Dr. R.P.S. Bali contribute meaningfully to the proceedings.
