Although the virus is not a direct threat to humans, it poses significant risks to dairy herds, with reported cases also emerging among goats.

State Agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball emphasized the importance of vigilance, stating, "While we have not encountered any cases of HPAI in livestock within New York state, we are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with our farmers, veterinarians, and partners at USDA and in other states."

Temporary import requirements have been implemented to ensure the health of animals entering New York and to prevent transmission from affected premises, safeguarding local livestock. Farmers are encouraged to maintain stringent biosecurity measures and remain in contact with authorities and veterinarians as the situation evolves.

The outbreak was initially confirmed in dairy cattle in Texas in late March and has since spread to Kansas, New Mexico, Michigan, Idaho, Ohio, North Carolina, and South Dakota. Additionally, cases have been identified in young goats in Minnesota, occurring in proximity to HPAI-infected poultry.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the virus originates from the same strain affecting wild birds and commercial poultry flocks, with sporadic infections also documented in various wild mammals and goats, including a herd in the United States.
